What is a "Shaman"?

In ancient history, people used to live in tribes and when people got sick they did not go to visit doctors, clinics or hospitals. They all counted on the Shaman, who was responsible for nursing and curing the sick tribe members. The Shamans passed their knowledge of medicinal herbs from generation to generation and over time, a great amount of medicinal wisdom was accumulated. Shamans held a highly respected position in society and were known to have super-human capabilities such as communicating with spirits, reading minds and placing curses. In some places around the world, like Brazil, Mexico and Africa, there are tribes where Shamans still exist.
