Koala
The koala is an arboreal (lives in trees) herbivorous (eats plants) marsupial (has a pouch in which it raises its joeys), native to Australia.
The koala is found along the coastal regions of eastern and southern Australia. Populations of koalas can also be found inland in regions with enough moisture to support suitable woodlands.
The koala lives almost entirely on eucalyptus leaves. Koalas eat an average of 500 g of eucalyptus leaves each day, chewing them with powerful jaws to a very fine paste before swallowing. Koalas spend about three of their five active hours each day eating. Feeding occurs at any time of day, but usually at night. The rest of the time (about 16-18 hours), the koala rests mostly motionless, sleeping most of the time.
